A Scanning Electron Microscopic Study on the Age Changes of the Blood Vessel Hole in the Surface of the Human Madible

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the age changes of the blood vessel hole in the surface of the human mandible by scanning electron microscopy.
For this study, mandibles from embalemd human cadavers were obtained from twenty subjects ranging 20 to 70 years.
The mandibles were stored in 1.0% glutaraldehyde 1.5%-paragormaldehyde in 0.1M cacodylate buffer at pH 7.4 and treated for removal of the soft tissues with changes daily of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite for a period of 4 days. The blood vessel holes
were
separated from body of mandible with the diamond disk.
The specimens containing blood vessel hole were gently washed in several changes of distilled water to remove sodium hypochlorite.
For scanning electron microscope observation, the specimens were postfixed in 1% osmium tetroxide (cacodylate buffer, pH7.4), dehydrated through graded ethanols to absolute, transferred to isoamyl acetate, further dried by critical point method
with
liquid Co2, and coated with gold by ion-coating. The observations were made on JSM-35C, JEOL scanning electron microscope.
@ES The results were as follows ;
@EN 1. The blood hole of the mandible from 20 year-old man revealed distinctness of the circumference of the entrance and smooth surface of the wall.
2. The constricted blood vessel hole of the mandible from 50 year-old mand appeared roughness of the circumference of the entrance, irregular surface of the wall formed by calculus-like structures and a few shallow-bottomed osteocyte lacunae.
3. The constricted blood vessel holes of the mandible from 70 yeay-old man were characterized extremely roughness of the circumference of the entrance, and irregularity of the surface of the wall formed by calculus-like structures and
fissure-like
defects.
